Frequently Asked Questions
Under the World Handicap System, your Handicap Index is calculated from Score Differentials. Each Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. The system takes the best differentials from your 20 most recent rounds (best 8 of 20), averages them, and multiplies by 0.96. Fewer rounds use fewer best differentials, with an additional soft-cap adjustment for very low round counts.
A Score Differential measures your performance relative to the course difficulty. Formula: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer; Slope Rating (55–155, standard 113) reflects difficulty for a bogey golfer. This normalises scores so rounds from different courses are comparable.
The 0.96 factor (known as the "bonus for excellence" or "playing condition calculation adjustment") ensures the Handicap Index rewards above-average performance. It applies a 4% reduction to encourage players to try their best — a golfer who consistently plays to potential will have a slightly lower index than their average differential alone would suggest.
Under WHS, the maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for all golfers regardless of gender. This replaced the previous system where men's and women's maximums differed. A Handicap Index of 54 allows virtually any recreational golfer to get an official index and participate in handicap events.
Your Handicap Index is a portable measure of ability — the same number regardless of which course you play. Your Course Handicap is specific to a particular course on a given day. Formula: Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par). It adjusts strokes so competition is fair across different courses.
How the WHS Golf Handicap System Works
The World Handicap System (WHS) was introduced in 2020, unifying six different handicap systems used globally into one universal standard. It is overseen by the USGA and R&A and used in over 90 countries.
Step-by-Step Handicap Calculation
- Step 1: Calculate Score Differential for each round: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
- Step 2: Take your 20 most recent Score Differentials
- Step 3: Select the best (lowest) N differentials based on the WHS table above
- Step 4: Average the selected differentials
- Step 5: Multiply by 0.96 (the "bonus for excellence" factor)
- Step 6: Apply soft cap adjustment if round count is below 5
- Step 7: Truncate to one decimal place (not rounded)
Adjusted Gross Score
Before calculating a differential, you must apply the Net Double Bogey adjustment to your gross score. For each hole, your maximum score is: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. Any holes where you scored worse than that cap are reduced to the cap score. This prevents a single bad hole from unfairly inflating your differential.
