What is an hours calculator?

An hours calculator finds the amount of time between a start time and an end time. It is commonly used for work shifts, timesheets, payroll, billing, study sessions, travel durations, and overnight schedules. This tool shows the answer as hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.

How to use this hours calculator

  1. Enter the start time and end time.
  2. Keep Same day selected for normal daytime ranges.
  3. Choose Ends next day for overnight shifts such as 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  4. Open Advanced options only if you need to subtract break time or round the result.
  5. Read the net duration, decimal hours, total minutes, gross duration, and break deducted.

Examples

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM

From 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes, equal to 8.50 decimal hours or 510 minutes.

10:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Select Ends next day. The calculator treats 6:00 AM as the next morning and returns 8 hours.

Work shift with lunch

For 9:00 to 5:30 with a 30-minute break, enter 30 in Break time. The net result is 8 hours.

Payroll decimal hours

7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 decimal hours because 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour.
